California antispam bill passes

Well, we have some really good news.

California SB186, a really good antispam bill, is being signed by the
governor.

The NY Times has the details.

It allows you to sue a spammer in small claims court for $1000 per spam,
and bans address harvesting, and a lot more. I'll get more details.

This bill was entered by Senator Kevin Murray, who deserves a lot of credit.

However, we need to give special credit to Senator Debra Bowen, whose
prior bill, SB12, really influenced SB186.

The folks at Consumers Union really made a difference, and their new
action center will help with other matters, like with href=http://www.financialprivacynow.org/>our financial privacy and href=http://www.escapecellhell.org> consumer cell phone rights.
PLEASE check them out.

Also, the legal team at Perkins-Coie
really helped.

Finally, remember I watch too many reruns of The West Wing, so in the
spirit of Toby and Josh, I want to really thank Jennie Bretschneider, a
Bowne staffer, for her work on this, even though normally staffers don't
get credit.
