Scammers and sleazy apartment brokers

First, just remember that there are a lot of scams floating around the Internet, and the scammers try to hit people who post with us. They disregard the culture of trust we have and that pisses me off.

Two major indicators of a scam are:

* offer of a cashier's check, particularly if the amount is far in excess of the purchase price of your item, and
* a request to wire cash, say, through Western Union

Either of these can be completely legitimate… but we're hearing about a lot of fake cashier's checks, and requests to wire cash which lie about how you can control the release of cash.

Aside from that, I'm still spending a lot of time dealing with unscrupulous apartment brokers in NYC. The good news is that we're turning the tide… but watch out for brokers:

* who post in the "owners" section
* who post apartments you pay a fee to rent in the "no fee" section

… and just to remind people, I don't have any law enforcement fantasies, nor do I think I'm Batman, except for recreational purposes.
