People in California worked really hard to get a good antispam law passed, one which helped fight spam and would be fair to legitimate marketers.
Well, the lobbyists in Washington won, they're getting a law passed which helps the spammers. It has some good features, but pre-empts state laws.
In particular, the really good California law allows anyone to sue a spammer, and in an opt-in law, meaning that you have to agree to receive emailed ads ahead of time.
President Bush will probably sign the Federal law, which will tell us whose side he's on, and how seriously he feels about democracy and lobbyists.
