When I was in the corporate world, people assumed that commercial, expensive software was the high quality, better supported code.
Well, the open source and hacker movements have shown that's not true. If you get the better open source stuff, like Linux, it is much more reliable and secure, and better supported than commercial software usually is. Software done for the love of our craft is usually pretty good.
In about a month, there's a good conference about this, codecon where programmers talk about notable open source efforts.
