Last night, Jeff Jarvis of the redoubtable buzz machine held a meeting at the Web 2.0 conference.
He was asking what private groups might do for disaster preparedness and recovery, given the way FEMA management seems to have been corrupted.
This is a really good effort, and I was very impressed by those involved, including Michael Powell, former FCC head, and representatives from Google and Yahoo. For serious info, check the related wiki
Note that these groups had already really helped with:
- fund raising
- people finding
- jobs for survivors
However, there's little coordination.
I suggested that the folks at Yahoo and Google get formally assigned to such efforts and genuinely work together, particularly considering we live in an area prone to earthquakes. Sometimes, there's no substitute for smart people whose job it is to get stuff done. Last night, I made this suggestion facetiously, noting my occasional smartass tendency… but this might make something happen.
