Folks, I guess I gotta repeat it…
I feel very strongly that citizen journalism is a big deal, and can complement existing newsroom reporting, but is no way a replacement for it. Almost every journalist I talk to is way ahead of me on this.
Newsrooms have fact checking, editing and can support remote bureaus in places like Baghdad, and we can't afford to lose that. They can also support serious investigative journalism, sometimes working with the Center for Public Integrity or the Center for Investigative Journalism.
We're already seeing the two blur together, and I feel that we'll soon see a spectrum of reporting, from professional to talented amateur. The challenge will be finding the really trusted stuff and to discourage disinformation campaigns.
