Setting the record straight regarding crime on craigslist

Setting the record straight regarding crime on craigslist

We're really horrified and saddened that our community services have been associated in any way with a crime of violence.

There appears to be a psycho on the loose around Boston.

We always help the cops out fast with the help they need from us, but they tell us not to comment on current investigations.

That is, we're effective at helping cops and DAs with the forensics they need to catch crooks. Downside is increased press coverage, creating wrong perceptions regarding craigslist, but we'll still do the right thing.

craigslist gets around 50 million people using it per month; considering that, the crime rate we see is very low.

That's a testament to the trustworthiness of the vast majority of community members… and maybe most crooks realize how vulnerable they are using our site.

Hey, do me a favor, and pass this on.

As posted in the national media today:
Craig Newmark, founder and owner of Craig's List, is the godfather of my daughter Kiana.
He is a stand-up guy dealing the best he can with his unanticipated long-term success of his Web site.
I know WRH is not picking on CL, but, for all other readers, CL and/or the Internet is not the root of all evil. People will always find avenues for their own personal outlet of evil intentions.
Craig's List is, unfortunately one of them, only due to the popularity of his site. People will do whatever they want to do via whatever means they can. The fact that some scumbags choose his site should not reflect on him or his Web site.

Happy Endings?

Maybe it isn't craigslist problem, maybe the problem is that prostitution should be legal and regulated and then it would be safer. I just finished a documentary on Asian massage parlors in Rhode Island were prostitution is legal, check it out.

I live in Boston and so of course this is top of mind here. It astonishing that someone could try to blame an internet site for murder. Do you think this lunatic would be a regular upstanding citizen if there were no Craigslist? I'm guessing he would have found some othe web site or some other vehicle if the web were not available.

And now the sheriff of Wayne County (Detroit area) is on the case against Craigslist (Sheriff Warren Evans charged Wednesday that Craigslist is major source of prostitution. He said the evidence will be sent to Chicago to bolster a federal civil case filed March 5 against the giant Internet firm by the Cook County sheriff. The lawsuit demands that Craigslist remove listings under the heading “erotic services.”) because, of course, prostitution didn't exist in the Detroit area before Craigslist came along. Or, maybe it has something to do with his intent to run for mayor of Detroit in November…

Lets hope they arrested the right person. And ditto what others said – CL is so big that there will (unfortunately) be a few bad situations, but nice to know they Craig and company are doing all they can to address that.

I think craig is right, the numbers speak for themselves. That said, there have always been issues with the webs ability to allow anonymous mutual contact. It is in fact, A new thing under the sun, to which our culture will adapt over time. I have been a strong supporter of web based anonymity, and feel that on the whole, it is a Good Thing. Craig adoption of telephone based identity verification does point towards a future in which, voluntarily, users will cede anonymity in favor of more verifed identiy. All good things; the culture is learning.
