that is one of several species of hawkmoth, also known as sphinx moths .. did you see any pink on it? if so, it's possibly a Big poplar sphinx (Pachysphinx occidentalis) or maybe a White-lined Sphinx moth, (Hiles lineata). what species of plant is it nectaring on? it looks like a Solanacea, probably a tomato plant. knowing the plant ID can help you narrow down your moth ID …

I'm in southern France, and we have these in the garden. Have been discussing for years if they were some sort of hummingbird. Fun to find out what they were by accident on your site!

What an awesome opportunity to get some great shots. When our hummingbirds approach the feeder, I sometimes think they are big bugs!
