A little customer service for Wikipedia bios

A little customer service for Wikipedia bios

Wiki  I feel quite strongly about the importance of Wikipedia for everyone on the
planet. craigslist might help you get through the day, but Wikipedia is
becoming our living history, it's really for the ages.

As such, it's important the Wikipedia Biographies of Living Persons need to be
fair to everyone. A bio should not be an arena for bad guys to spread
disinformation. It's already happened, say, attacking the Sandler family,
who've done a lot of good work for our country.

The folks at Wikipedia are looking into the future, figuring out how to
prevent problems like that. However, in the short range, I've volunteered to
help out with short term problems, as part of my normal daily customer service
work. (That is, it's part of what I feel is my personal public service
mission. This is on my own initiative, not strictly as part of my role on the
advisory board.)

If you see a bio that's been attacked, please let me know, and normally I'll
find a way to get it fixed, have already done so in the case of a sitting US
Senator. Sure, there problems with this relating to how much I can do in a
day.

If I can't get it done, well, I know a guy …

A Wikipedia editor posted that they are NOT interested in the TRUTH, but what people THINK. So if you have enough money, people, an attorney not afraid of strong-arming Wikipedia, then no matter how many references you provide, links, testimonials, quotes, etc. you simply CANNOT POST THE TRUTH unless it jives with whatever the "editors" deem worthy of posting. As for the "discussion" pages, much is taken down on those pages too.
Often you CANNOT see the background discussion. Wikipedia is increasingly used for self-service, in violation of its stated TOS. Just writing this upsets me, because I experienced this in vivid, sickening details. I followed a case for a couple of months. The back-room intrigue would make for a scary movie. Too many people have NO idea what goes on.
It really is a case of deliberate deception. No matter the politics, bullies rule Wikipedia.
Do you REALLY think you can make a difference? Have you seen the now-online Wiki documentary? Discusses the TRUTH is of NO importance to Wikipedia. It's what people think, not a reflection of reality.
Scary, scary stuff. Ruined Encyclopedia Brittannica. Sad THEY didn't post their researched info online. Publishers don't believe in giving away info. If they understood how to turn that into making money.
Wikipedia allows the very worst to reign online. Mr. Newmark, write me, and I'll email files. I made copious PDFs and screenshots of what I experienced. Then tell me if you really believe what you just wrote.

Craig Newmark

actually, not the case at all. They write that the standard of truth is verifiability.
If you have suggestions how to make it better, please let me know, Ill make sure they hear them.

Nice one! Living bios are one of the biggest headaches for Wikipedia … just don't get burnt out :-)
There's a pretty good BLP team on OTRS (the Wikimedia email system), anything you're not sure of can be bounced to others.
Also, you posting this has made the news. It reinforces that we do in fact care and do try to get it right, in the face of that certain proportion of the Internet who are … not so concerned. So thank you :-)

Craig, I will gladly email you the PDFs and you can read through Wiki editor's comments.
AND he was using a FREE craigslist posting for interns. His so-called "non-profit" was NOT recognized by either the state or feds. He took money, donations, got interns (some from MAJOR colleges) and wasn't even running a legit non-profit. A phone call to the state and feds verified that! PLUS they will send written verification.
YOU think Wikipedia paid attention when someone (NOT I!) posted that? Think they allowed that to remain posted? (NO)
They also wrote: THE TRUTH DOES NOT MATTER. What matters IS MAJORITY OPINION. NOT verifiable facts, but what most people THINK.
When someone has a crew working on a page, it would appear the majority were of one opinion. Is that the pathway to truth?
This case involved someone who has been taken to court and repeatedly lost cases. He publicly tells all he won them!
But all the PUBLICLY available links to the court cases were deleted. The links from people who were ruined, swindled, or otherwise negatively affected by this man were removed.
AND his attorney accused me of hacking into govt files to post the info. He threatened me with a federal lawsuit! I had NOTHING to do with it! I don't know who posted the info.
PLUS anyone could log into the court system and search. It's public info!
I merely watched and created historical PDFs as people posted and argued info.
**But this attorney was able to make Wikipedia REMOVE verifiable links!!!
The worst case was that various people were contributing. The editors concluded that because they were from different parts of the world, with various IP addresses, they couldn't possibly be working together.
Yes, they wrote that.
DID NOT matter that the quotes, links, legal cases were involving some of the VERY people this man was involved with! THEY were refuting his claims, on websites, in books, in mags, etc. YEARS before Wikipedia. But NO, that wasn't good enough.
Please, just give me an email addy, I will dig through my files, and send you an archive. Cos most of that info has been removed. I saved PDFs . . .
ALSO, by the time the page was finalized, the ORIGINAL was posted all over the net. Let's think about that! What is often posted and later revised on Wikipedia is NOT updated elsewhere. Oh, people can use Wikipedia for all kinds of devious promotions.
I could go on and on about this particular man and his "dirty deeds done cheap."
PS This man has caused a lot of harm to numerous people for a long time. We are not talking a matter of opinion. Read some of the long-standing quotes (and court cases) from people who do not know each other. Interesting so many of them had the same take.
Oops, you can't read those links from Wikipedia. They were removed. You'd have to put in a lot of online research time. AND know where to look. And know the era, the genre, to know who is credible and who is not.
Oh that's right, some unpaid interns of his and whoever is behind Wikipedia DECIDED the validity. NOT the people who knew and worked with him, were damaged by him, in various projects, over 30 years. What do THEY know??
I am risking a lot to write this. The last thing I need is for the attorney to contact me again. That's why no names.
Wikipedia can be very dangerous because too many people are using it for their own agendas. NOT the truth.
FYI: I absolutely have first-hand knowledge of this man, his tactics, and listened as many times he told me his plans for his Wikipedia entry, before it was posted.
AFTER he drastically damaged my life/work, I finally talked to people I knew, who knew him. They had heard this story many times. It's a really serious, sad story.
This man is aided and abetted by Wikipedia. So far, there's little any of us can do. How do we yell louder than his ever-changing, but always energetic group of interns, keeping watch over his Wiki page?
How can the truth be told if LEGAL links, quotes from those who knew him, are ERASED from Wikipedia??
And Craig, it got really nasty in the discussion pages. ANY comments shedding any negative info/facts towards this man was IMMEDIATELY shot down.
I've never been around such shoddy research and approach. IF they behaved this way in a college class (which I've taught), I'd flunk them all.
Ah, it's hard to move on in one's life when one fervently PRAYS for the day when this man's actions will never again damage others. It's heartbreaking to find others who experienced what so many of us experienced.
That history is missing on Wikipedia.
Can't be verified? You wanna see documents? I have them, but they don't want to see them.
Again, pls tell me where I can send the files, and you can read it for yourself. Otherwise, this is just too heart-breaking. To know people like YOU think they really care about the truth.
