That's what I'd call him, yeah. The yellowish (as opposed to dark gray) beak, the large amount of white on the wings (without the little "check mark" that is at right angles to the wingbars), and the relatively bright yellow all push me in that direction, as opposed to the more common Lesser Goldfinch.
The other thing I noticed when checking them out together one day on my feeder is that the Lesser really _is_ a smaller bird. The American isn't a very big bird in absolute terms, but after getting used to the size of all the Lessers I was getting at the feeder, the American is noticeably bigger.
