Hi Craig. Social Security also handles Supplemental Security Income for children and adults with disabilities. This includes people on the Autism Spectrum. I will tell you from my experience working with families of individuals with Asperger’s and Autism, that Social Security Admin. does not make it easy for these individuals to get benefits so they can live on their own or improve their lives. Many people have been turned down on the first application then must appeal and hire an attorney to get the benefits they are entitled to. Many people give up and go without. http://vcasap.org

My sister’s parental rights were terminated, my aunt took custody of my niece. Later, my aunt stated that she could not take care of my 8yr old niece, so I took conservative guardian ship over my niece. Can I apply for assistance for my niece? My niece does not have any abnormalities, she’s a healthy 8yr old girl. Thank You.
